The Birla Institute of Technology was established in 1955 at Mesra, Ranchi, Jharkhand by the philanthropist and industrialist B M Birla. It was affiliated to Patna University till 1960 and than to Ranchi University. In 1986 it was declared as a deemed university. The main campus is spread over an area of 780-acre and is located 16 kilometers from Ranchi. There are two rivers, Jhumar & Suvarnrekha, that defines its boundary.
- The first institute in India to establish a department of space engineering and rocketry.
- The first institute in India to introduced the concept of Small Industries Entrepreneurs' Park.
- The first institute in India to establish an oveseas extension center.
- One of the few universities in India to be accorded a supercomputer (PARAM 10000) at the core of its IT infrastructure.
